Atlanta plans $737,000 in refunds over water bills

Atlanta water officials said more than 500 customers were overbilled.

An independent audit of 160,000 water meters found that 541 customers are due refunds. Pending approval from the Atlanta City Council, those customers will be refunded $737,000.

Atlanta City Councilman Howard Shook, who is the chairman of the utilities committee, said the overbilling came after new meters were installed in 2006.

"Swapped out the old meters for these new high-tech meters, there was not enough time allotted to the job," Shook said. "The city tried to do five years' worth of work in three years, unfortunately with predictable results"

Shook said that overall, the system is improving. Back in 2012, the department had to refund $7 million, FOX 5's Morse Diggs said.
