Disable Photo Geo-Tagging On Your Smartphone

Posted: Updated:

When you post online, you could be giving away more info than you think.

Next time you write something on Twitter, or post a photo on Craigslist or any social media site - be aware you're also posting little bits on information called "geotags" that can tell tech-savvy people - possibly criminals - a lot about you.

In photos or videos taken with a GPS capable smartphone - the geotags can tell someone exactly when the picture was taken - to the second - and where it was taken, with exact latitude and longitude coordinates.

That can let anyone out there know where you live and where you are right now.

Even written tweets and other posts - without pictures - can tell someone when and where you sent it from. Think of what a criminal - or a stalker - could do with that information.

For simple tips on how to disable geo-tagging on your iOS device you can watch the video above or check out the links below. If you need more help, you can always tweet our Tech Ninja, Tshaka Armstrong @tshakaarmstrong or shoot him an email using the link on the left side of this post.

Turn off geotagging in your iPhone:

  • Go to "Settings" on the home screen
  • Go to the "Privacy"" menu.
  • Choose "Location Services" from the top of the screen.
  • Look for the "Camera" setting. Change it from the "ON" position to the "OFF" position.

Turn off geotagging in your Android:

  • Start camera app
  • Hit the Settings button
  • Find the "GPS Tag" option, and turn it off
