Teen charged after explosives found at house

WALTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A 13-year-old student at Carver Middle School is facing charges after authorities say two bombs were found in his bedroom.

The boy's mother called 911 after allegedly finding the explosives at their Snows Mill Road home on Monday morning, police said.

"One was what you would consider a small pipe bomb and the other one was an inert grenade, hand grenade that he had packed full of powder and some fragments with percussion where you could throw it and it would go off," said Captain Greg Hall of the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

Walton County Sheriff's deputies evacuated the home and a Georgia Bureau of Investigation bomb squad was called in.

Investigators say their concern level was raised even more because of an incident prior to a previously scheduled court appearance. Authorities said that the mother discovered a knife sewn into the jacket that the boy was going to wear to court Tuesday morning.

"I don't know what his intentions were with that knife, but it would scare me that it could potentially get inside of a court house," Hall said.

Hall said there is no indication that the teen ever took any weapons or bombs to school.

"I can't say what his exact intentions were, but he definitely had the ability to hurt people," Hall said.

The boy is being held in juvenile detention.
