Teen makes honor roll in DPS 'Second Chance Program'

It can be a vicious cycle: Teens raised in broken homes, or out on the streets, fall behind in school and are unable to catch up. The Detroit Public School's 'Second Chance Program' is working to change that, and get the students to a successful graduation.

One of those students is 18-year-old Sasha Bibbs. Bibbs has been forced out of her mother's care and into the home of her grandmother, and has since been shuffled from house to house and school to school.

The program is a night school option that allows students to obtain 20 credits in 10 weeks. That's half the time of a regular day school. "It's quiet. The class sizes are smaller. There's more intimate communication with there teachers," explains Andrea Taylor, principal at West Side Academy.

That school is one of five DPS schools that offers the 'Second Chance Program.'

Bibbs is now on the honor roll at West Side Academy. She says she wants to study culinary arts at Henry Ford Community College and become a chef one day. "I'm excited, because I can finally say that I accomplished something," she tells Fox 2.

The 'Second Chance Program' meets Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Students receive free meals, bus cards and supplies. The program is offered at no cost.
