The House unanimously passed a bill Monday sponsored by Georgia Republican Congressman Jack Kingston that would guarantee the salaries of our troops, but the livelihoods of hundreds of military families across the state would be impacted in the event of a federal government shutdown.

Georgia's National Guard troops train under all sorts of conditions to be ready in the event that their country needs them, but they don't do it alone. The support staff of full-time federal technicians could be out of work if the government shuts down.

"That number is bumping up right against 2,000 people that will essentially be furloughed as of tomorrow morning," said Georgia National Guard Major Gen. Jim Butterworth.

Butterworth commands the Georgia National Guard. He met with his staff on Monday to find out how to keep the guard going without those federal employees.

"We've been adjusting to what the site picture looks like and we're ready for the possibility of a government shutdown," Butterworth said.

Major Gen. Butterworth says that sequestration has already hit some of these same federal employees and he doesn't like how Congress is handling the budget debate

"Solving those problems on the backs of our team members is not the proper way and truly a very, very difficult thing for our families," Butterworth said.

But the general assures the country and state of Georgia that no matter what happens, the Georgia National Guard will be ready.

"Americans and Georgians, specifically, can know is that their military is ready and will always be ready," Butterworth said.

Butterworth said he stands to lose about budget of about $700 million if the government shuts down. That would affect employees of the Georgia National Guard in every single county.
