Family mourns Cobb County student killed in Alabama

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities are searching for the suspect in the shooting death of a Mableton native near Tuskegee University.

Bobby Smith Jr., a 21-year-old senior at Tuskegee University, died after being shot while at a block party on Friday.

The slain student's father, Bobby Smith Sr., said that police told him a stranger approached several female students and tried to get into pictures they were taking.  Afterwards, the stranger began shooting and Bobby Smith Jr. was shot in the back, according to his father.

Smith, known to friends and family as "B.J.", was an all-star football player and accomplished tennis player at South Cobb High School. While in college, Smith played tennis and focused on getting a degree in finance.

The victim's mother, Cynthia Smith, said her son was a mentor to younger students.

Smith's parents are fearful that the gunman could strike again if he isn't apprehended soon.

"I don't know what to say to these young men. You don't have the right to take somebody's life. You don't have the right to do it," Cynthia Smith said.

It has been a difficult year for the Smith family. Last year, the Smiths buried their 32-year-old daughter, who passed away after a crash on Camp Creek Parkway.

Tuskegee University is planning to hold a memorial service on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Smith's funeral will be held Saturday at Mount Paran Church on Mount Paran Road.
