Neighbors chip in to help build playground for Maryvale Prep

Posted: Updated:

Students need good teachers, classrooms, books and computers. But they also need a place to play.

One west Phoenix school didn't have a playground, but thanks to the community, they are getting a brand new place to play.

Sounds of hammers and sanding were heard Friday while volunteer workers built a playground for Maryvale Prep, a small charter school of kids that want to go to college.

"When it's all ready I'm going to be excited for this new playground, I can't wait," says student Nadia Myers.

The school couldn't afford it, so neighbors and friends pitched in.

"It's a great opportunity to help kids and that's what it is all about. There is not a better investment than our kids that's why we are here," says Johnny Basha, or Bashas' food stores.

The kids designed the playground themselves.

The kids wanted all kinds of things to play on like swings and jungle gyms but they also wanted some shade. They need it in the summer.

They started the job around 8 Friday morning. Firefighters and police officers in the area pitched in to build too.

The 200 volunteers finished the job around 2:30 this afternoon. It's ready to play on.

The playground will now be a point of pride for the students.
