Tigers in playoffs will pay off for Detroit economy

Posted: Updated:

(WJBK) -- The Tigers claimed their third straight AL Central championship -- it's great news for the team and the Detroit economy.

Fox 2 resident money man Murray Feldman did a little research, and those playoff games will pump millions of dollars into the city. Each post-season game will bring in an estimated four to six million dollars in economic activity, according to University of Detroit Mercy marketing professor Dr. Mike Bernacchi. And that's just for the American League Division Series games. World Series home games would pull in an estimated eight to ten million dollars. That could add up to $75 million if (when) the Tigers go all the way.

The player's bank accounts won't look too shabby either. The Detroit Tigers have the third highest payroll of all MLB teams moving on to the post-season. In fact, it's about 50% higher than the league's average. But as the team proved Wednesday night... you get what you pay for. We're sure most fans will say it's money well spent.
