Happenings at Halas: Bears prep for Lions

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Bears dove into preparation for Detroit Wednesday - a key divisional matchup to wrap the September schedule.

But it's a very tough and dangerous Lions team that stands in the way of the Bears perfect 4-0 start - namely Calvin Johnson. Megatron is the Lions most powerful weapon. To stop him the Bears have routinely used Charles Tillman so the fact that Peanut is listed as day to day with a groin injury and didn't participate is significant.

Check out these numbers in 10 games vs Peanut - Johnson has a combined 47 receptions for 715 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tillman is the reason. Even Megatron acknowledged Wednesday, "he does what he does really well."

The Bears remain optimistic that Peanut can start but he's yet to play a full game this season. First dehydration vs Cincinnati, then knee issues vs Minnesota, then this groin thing vs Pittsburgh. The Bengals successfully attacked the back up corner position in week one. The Lions will do it again Sunday unless Zach Bowman or CJ Wilson show they can keep up...yikes. Though they both deserve a chance to try, it's going to be a huge team effort if Tillman isn't 100%. And he likely won't be.

So there's that issue. Not to mention the absence of Henry Melton, gone for the season with a torn ACL. Enter the "Big Nasty"- Nate Collins. Cracks me up that this is somehow his nickname...he's the furthest thing from it off the field. And he prefers we describe him as aggressive, a hard worker and a player that does his job.

Already he leads all Bears D-lineman in tackles, and that's just as a rotation player. Sunday will mark his first career regular season start. Though he started two games in the preseason for a then concussed Melton that turned out to be valuable. It helps that he has a past with Mel Tucker.

His D-Coordinator in Jacksonville, Tucker told Collins if you can rush the passer you'll always have a job in the NFL. Collins prides himself on this. During the preseason he had 8 tackles and 2 sacks. For a Bears front that has a combined 1 through 3 games, they'll welcome him. Corey Wootten acknowledged that Collins is quicker than we realize and has an ability to get to the pocket. All things they will need against a Detroit O-line that's allowed a league low two sacks through the first 3 games.

The Bears have had their way with Detroit over the last decade - a combined 10-6, winning 10 of the last 11. But the head coach preaches "Past performance is no indication of future success." And at 3-0 he has his teams attention...no doubt they're getting it.
