Search continues for missing U of M student Anarae Schunk

BURNSVILLE, Minn. (KMSP) -

Police are continuing their search for Anarae Schunk, the 20-year-old University of Minnesota student reported missing on Monday.

Schunk was last seen with 31-year-old Shavelle Oscar Chavez-Nelson, who was arrested Tuesday in connection with the deadly shooting at Nina's Grill in Burnsville, Minn. over the weekend.

Burnsville police are looking for a 1983 Buick LeSabre with Minnesota license plates 662 EWR. Burnsville police have reason to believe this was the car used by Chavez-Nelson as he fled the scene of the murder. The car is registered to Nelson, but has not been located.

NO VOLUNTEER SEARCHES

Police are requesting that no volunteer search parties be formed, as it could compromise evidence in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Burnsville Police Department at 952-895-4594 or 952-895-INFO (4636).

LAST CONTACT WITH ANARAE SCHUNK

According to friends and family members, Schunk was last seen at noon on Saturday the Caribou Coffee located near Cliff Road and Highway 13 in Burnsville, which is just across the street from Nina's Grill.

Loved ones say her father dropped her off at the coffee shop, where she spent several hours studying and playing chess with friends; however, she did not make it to a party later that night.

The last time loved ones heard from Schunk was at 9:14 p.m. on Saturday, when she sent a text message to her mother and a friend in Wisconsin that simply said, "I love you." Since then, her phone has gone straight to voicemail and her social media accounts have been inactive.

Surveillance video shows Schunk at Nina's Grill with Chavez-Nelson shortly after the last text message she sent and a few hours before the fatal shooting.

Her brother, Owen Schunk told FOX 9 News he saw the surveillance video, but it wasn't particularly telling.

"They came out of the door. He's opening the door, she's in front of him. They're not shaking hands, holding hands, engaging in any sort of contact --it seems cordial, but non-telling," he said.

Police still do not know if Anarae Schunk was with Chavez-Nelson when she left the bar.

NOT A SUSPECT

Officers stressed that Anarae Schunk is not considered a suspect in the shooting.

Police did not elaborate on her relationship to Chavez-Nelson; however, Owen Schunk told FOX 9 that Chavez-Nelson is his sister's ex-boyfriend and that the two had dated for about four to six months about a year ago.
