Prosecutors have just a few more witnesses to question in the murder trial of Jeffery Trevino, the man accused of killing his wife, Kira, at the couple's St. Paul home last February.
Wednesday's proceedings opened with a quick testimony from the barge maintenance worker who spotted the remains of Kira Steger in the Mississippi River on May 8.
The mechanic noticed what he thought was a human shoulder in debris floating in the river between Robert Street and Highway 52 in downtown St. Paul. St. Paul firefighters recovered the decomposed remains and used dental records to identify Steger. The Ramsey County medical examiner's office declared she died from homicidal violence.
The portion of the Mississippi River where the body was recovered is the closest the river comes to the couple's home, about five miles directly south.
Next on the stand was the Ramsey County chief medical examiner, who detailed the autopsy of Kira Steger.
The autopsy concluded Steger she died from homicidal violence. Injuries to her body included a cut above her left eye, an upper lip injury, a broken index finger and lacerations to her liver.
In conducting the autopsy, they studied Kira's stomach contents and compared them to her date night meal with Jeff.
The medical examiner couldn't pinpoint the cause of death, but said that she was possibly smothered. They also couldn't say, with certainty, how long her body had been in the river.
MOM WALKS OUT
Kira Steger's mother stood up and walked out of the courtroom and graphic photos were shown during the medical examiner's testimony. Jeffery Trevino showed no emotion during the display of the photos.
LOCKDOWN BEFORE TESTIMONY
The start of Wednesday morning's testimony appeared to be in jeopardy when the Ramsey County courthouse was briefly placed on lockdown for the investigation of a suspicious package. The lockdown only lasted a few minutes.
Prosecutors said the blood found inside the couple's St. Paul rental home tells the true story. Read highlights of Tuesday's testimony from BCA Crime Scene Coordinator Lindsey Garfield at http://bit.ly/16IR2YK
