Gilbert residents not pleased about proposed mental hospital

Posted: Updated:
GILBERT, Ariz. -

It's a proposed development that's stirring up a lot of controversy. A new mental hospital could go up in the southeast valley, and some people who live in the area are not very happy about it.

The school bus stop is so close to the proposed site, opponents say it's a good reason to stop the plan.

"It is exactly 50 feet away from our gate," says resident Silva Tetroashvili.

People living in the Annecy neighborhood are planning to take their fight to the city.

"Our concern is that we could have a rogue patient. The hospital loses track of a patient. And then we will have issues. It puts our community, our families and our children in danger," says neighbor Tony Lube.

A company out of Kentucky hopes to build the facility on this empty lot, and they've already submitted plans to the city of Gilbert.

This is a rendering of the $14-million 72-bed behavioral health hospital known as Saguaro Springs.

"I think it is a wonderful service they do for people who need it, but not in such a residential community," says Tetroashvili.

The neighbors are also worried about property values.

"Well guess what the interest level goes away when they find out there is going to be a mental hospital built within 50 yards of our community. Who is going to want to live here? Who is going to want to invest in it," says Lube.

It seems their biggest concern is safety, especially for the children who would be waiting for a school bus just across the street.

"The parents are not there and the kids are by themselves and it is very dangerous," says Roy Reid.

"Yes you can have a hospital but don't think this is a proper place for it," says neighbor Carmen Mercado.

The city is expected to take us this issue at a meeting in early October.

This is actually the hospital's second choice for a location. The first was close to an elementary school and after protests from parents, the company decided to find a new location.

We called the company in Kentucky to get their side of all this. Our call was not returned.
