HOUGHTON, Mich. -- It took a lot of rolling, but Michigan Technological University students now have a chilly Guinness World Records mark to their name.

About 30 students at the school in the Upper Peninsula pitched in to make a 9.28-foot-high snowball with a circumference of 32.94 feet. The March 29 effort took more than two hours. This week, a certificate noting it as the world's largest arrived from Guinness.

Parshwa Patwa, a third-year mechanical engineering student, organized the effort to break the record that had been held by Dartmouth College. Patwa recorded the feat on video, and estimated the snowball weighed three or four tons.

The snowball's diameter was listed as 10.45 feet, according to the Guinness website. Sticky snow on the ground helped the effort, Patwa said.

"The day we broke the record was the nicest day in ... two weeks," Patwa said.

Two licensed surveyors were on hand to verify the snowball's size. Students involved in the record attempt were from the school's chapter of ASME, a society of mechanical engineers. Lots of snow to work with is typical for winters in Houghton, where the school is located.
