Dr. Oz Talks About Beauty Sleep

Posted: Updated:

Can't seem to get enough beauty sleep? The culprit may take your breath away. millions of Americans suffer from a commonly under-diagnosed sleep disorder that if treated, could actually improve your appearance, according to a new study.

The beauty benefits of better sleep come as no surprise to Dr. Mehmet Oz of the Dr. Oz show.

A new study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine reports that a special sleep apnea treatment, called C-Pap, left subjects more alert, more attractive, and even more youthful.

C-Pap helps improve airflow, which gets blocked in people with sleep apnea, causing them to pause breathing repeatedly through the night.

An estimated 18 million Americans have sleep apnea, but surprisingly, up to eighty percent of these cases go undiagnosed.

In truth, the beauty benefits of solving your sleep apnea problem is just a bonus. Consider the risks if you don't: untreated sleep apnea raises your risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

So how do you know you even have it? One clue is waking up suddenly during the night out of breath. Another is dry mouth or a sore throat in the morning.

And if you're snoring so loud your partner finds it intolerable, it's time to investigate further with your physician.

Remember, you can watch Doctor Oz every day at three p.m. On FOX 29.
