The powerful United Federation of Teachers, the union representing New York City schoolteachers, has switched from one Bill to another in the race for mayor. The UFT endorsed Democrat Bill de Blasio for the general election after backing rival Bill Thompson in the primary.
"Bill de Blasio, whose children attend our public schools, understands that our children deserve a real education, not just test prep, and that our educators deserve support and encouragement, not attacks," UFT President Michael Mulgrew said in a statement. "It's time for our teachers and City Hall to stand together to deliver the best education possible for our students. Bill de Blasio is the leader who will make it happen."
De Blasio, the city's current public advocate, faces Republican Joe Lhota, a former chairman of the MTA, in the general election in November.
