Detroit Police changing to 8-hour shifts

Posted: Updated:

Detroit Police Chief James Craig announced officers will begin working 8-hour shifts. This ends a period where officers normally worked 12-hour shifts.

DPD spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody says the longer shifts were hard on officers. He says the fatigue from a 12-hour shift is a major issue and caused safety concerns.

The shift changes will begin October 14th.

The announcement comes on the heels of an FBI report that shows Detroit only trails Flint in homicide and violent crimes.
