The Moon Like You Have Never Seen It

Posted: Updated:

Unbeknownst to a lot of us, the moon, just like many almost every planet known does actually rotate. We only see one side of it on planet earth because its own rotation is synchronized with its orbital period around our planet. This keeps one hemisphere pointed toward us leaving the other side of the moon a mystery. So what does it look like when it rotates? Well, a new piece of video shows us. Taken from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, NASA and Arizona State University stitch together the LRO imagery to create a seamless time-lapse movie of the moon's rotation, something we would expect to see if the satellite weren't tidally locked. The lunar month has been condensed into 24 seconds in the LRO vid. Check it out...
