CAVE CREEK, Ariz. -

A wild west showdown is brewing between two valley cities.

Since 1951, Scottsdale's official motto has been "the west's most western town." It's even written on the city's official seal below an image of a wild horse.

Another valley city wants to lay claim to that title -- but Scottsdale isn't going to let that happen without a fight.

Cave Creek claims that Scottsdale long ago turned its back on its old western heritage, and embraced the new economy -- high-rises, shopping malls -- and is now actually marketing itself as a place to get new medical care.

It's no doubt that Cave Creek has retained its western heritage and charm, and so its leaders have drafted a resolution that challenges Scottsdale's claim as the west's most western town.

To bring things further, Cave Creek has also challenged Scottsdale city leaders to a bull riding competition and a quick draw shootout at Cave Creek's Wild West Days in November.

If Cave Creek gets its way, the winner of those events will take the title of the west's most western town.

"Long ago, Scottsdale traded in their spring horseshoes for spring training. They decided shopping malls were more important than focusing on sustainability and hiking and being western. We're about boots, they're about suits," said Rodney Glassman, Cave Creek's interim town manager.

Unfortunately for Cave Creek, Scottsdale's slogan is copyrighted. So regardless who may win a shootout or competition, that slogan, more than 60 years old, isn't going anywhere.

"In some ways it's some harmless fun. A little camaraderie or competitiveness between the two towns or cities, and promotes who we both are. But no they just can't come and take it," said Scottsdale city councilman Dennis Robbins.

Regardless of whether it's fun and games or a serious move, it's got people talking, and is drumming up some publicity for Cave Creek's Wild West Days.

By the way, the resolution was approved at Monday's council meeting. Just about everyone was dressed in western gear.

Said one Cave Creek cowgirl, Jean Glass, at the meeting, "We're the real deal."

Added Larry Wendt, "I'll tell you what, we'll have a shootout for it, we'll flip a coin, card game, we'll be fair -- but we're taking the name. A lot of people didn't want to give it up in the west, and they had to!"

It's not clear what action Scottsdale will take next.
