No Monday class at Loving Elementary, still without power

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Loving Elementary in Detroit was closed Monday as the school is still without power.

Crews began working to restore the power later in the day today, but parents and staffers believe the damage is already done - the damage to student's education, that is. The first MEAP testing date is only a month away and every minute in the classroom is crucial to preparing the students for that test.

One parent tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley his son has missed three days of school already in the first three weeks of school.

The school's principal says the damage is much greater than he initially thought.

Crews had to order new power poles to replace the ones that were knocked down during last week's storm. The news poles will then need to be rewired and then install new transformers.

In the meantime, a generator was brought in to the school. The principal is also looking for a temporary location to hold classes in case power is not restored and the generator is not sufficient to power up the building.
