Cedarbrook Middle School Opens After Mold Delay

Posted: Updated:
CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, Pa. -

Kids headed back to class at Cedarbrook Middle School after getting an extra two weeks of summer vacation. The Cheltenham Township school district was forced to delay the first day because of an extensive mold problem.

Back in July, custodians found mold covering nearly everything, from desks to chairs to the walls. The district blames the old age of the building, coupled with an especially wet summer. Crews got to work immediately, working 16 hours a day, seven days a week. Today the school was finally able to open.

Teachers were excited for the new year.

"I'm just happy to be back; happy to see my kids. I just want to get the year started," said teacher Andrea Anderson.

Also excited to get things started were parents, who were glad their children's extended summer vacation ended.

"I'm just glad he's back in school now because it seemed like it was forever. I'm not concerned about the mold problem. I think they probably did a good job because they knew people were watching," commented Hajar Muhammad, a mom.

Dad James Grey works in construction. He also believes that the district did a good job of handling the mold.

"When you're dealing with kids, it's a different ball game to me. Knowing what I know about construction, I think the township did a great job. I would hope so; I will be checking," he said.

However, the superintendent admits that the clean up is not a permanent fix. They have to find a long term solution to keep the mold from coming back again, she told a town hall earlier this month.

The district has already conducted more than 100 air quality tests. They'll continue to do them throughout the year to make sure the school is safe. As for whether the students will have to make up the days they missed, the district will work with the teacher's union and administrators to figure it out.
