Collision involving traffic pole causes pedestrian's death
By FOX 10 News Staff
A 25-year-old man was killed Sunday night in a bizarre accident at 15th Avenue and McDowell.
According to Phoenix Police, a car going southbound on 15th Ave. collided with a vehicle heading eastbound on McDowell.
The impact was so intense that one car spun out and hit a traffic pole. The pole fell and hit the 25-year-old pedestrian, killing him.
Authorities say the crash happened after one of those cars ran a red light.
One person spoke to FOX 10 about what happened and was noticeably shaken up.
"I got outta the car. He was right there bleeding on the sidewalk. I guess the light pole had hit him. He had no pulse at all. It was horrible. It's something nobody should ever see or go through," said Luv-Leigh Ornelas, who was a passenger.
Officers believe the pedestrian was walking away from the intersection -- southbound on 15th Ave. and may not have even seen the pole falling.
"It's one in a million. I can't believe somebody was standing right under that pole when it happened," said Jeff Gullick, who lives nearby.
The occupants of the vehicles were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The intersection was blocked during the investigation. They're still trying to find out who was at fault in this crash. Depending on their findings, the driver responsible could face charges in connection to the victim's death. But right now, police say both drivers are blaming each other.
No names have been released in this case.
