ATLANTA -

Sunday marks the 50th year since four littler girls lost their lives in a Birmingham Church after it was bombed.

Hundreds of people packed the 16th Street Baptist Church to mark the anniversary.

The bombing became a powerful symbol of the depth of racial hatred in the south and helped to build momentum for the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Attorney General Eric Holder and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice attended the afternoon service.

On Saturday, the city of Birmingham unveiled a new sculpture at Kelly Ingram Park memorializing the incident and the loss of life so young. The bronze sculpture features the four girls: Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, Denise McNair and Cynthia Wesley.

It was later found that the bomb was set off by members of the Ku Klux Klan and was considered one of the worst acts of violence in the Civil Rights Era.

In Atlanta, Civil Rights leaders and members of the public gathered at the M.L. King Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College for a staged reading of the play 'Four Little Girls: Birmingham 1963.
