TEMPE, Ariz. -

As Arizona State University football players took the field Saturday night, law enforcement's crack down on underage drinking and excessive partying continued.

"I know I'm an idiot.. I try to be a good person."

It was a bad night for that DUI suspect in Tempe as he made an appeal for leniency after a Maricopa County Sheriff's sergeant pulled him over on his motorcycle.

The suspect failed the field sobriety test and the cuffs went on.

The arresting deputy sheriff was Jason Switzer.  He is part of a new effort by Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office. Deputies are blanketing the area, hoping to make it a safe game night at ASU.

"We're just in and around the Tempe area, just trying to help out with whatever issues they have.  The young students that are in town.. they get kind of crazy and don't make the best decisions when they've been drinking," he said.

The distraught motorcyclist caught the sergeant's attention as he weaved in and out of traffic in Tempe and appeared to make a run for it on Loop 101 -- telling Sgt. Switzer that he didn't see his lights.

"What I saw indicated to me that he's also impaired, so we're going to take him back to command post and process him as a DUI driver," explained Switzer.
