Metrolink Crash Anniversary Memorial

Posted: Updated:

A bell tolled, 25 times, for each of the victims who died at the Metrolink crash in Chatsworth, five years ago. The mournful sound, part of a remembrance that included the unveiling of a plaque at the Moorpark metrolink stop, where train 111 was heading before the crash that was ultimately blamed on the engineer texting, instead of paying attention. He missed a red light before the Chatsworth station, and ran head on into a freight train that had the right of way.

"It still hurts" says Carlos Garcia, uncle of one of those who died, adding, "yes, it's nice to have a place to remember...but it brings back the questions, why did it happen and what has been done since?"

Metrolink is on schedule setting up positive train control systems. enacted by law, after the accident, PTC s stop the train at red lights, automatically, even if the engineer does not, for whatever reason.

Cameras are now inside cabs, monitoring the engineers.

But even as MTA officials said, it may help to see those measures, but can never take away from the loss to the families involved.
