Utility: Power restored to 33K homes, businesses

Posted: Updated:

Power has been restored to about 33,000 southeastern Michigan homes and business that had electricity knocked out after storms and strong winds toppled trees and branches onto hundreds of overhead lines.

DTE Energy Co. says that as of 5 p.m. Thursday, 45,000 of its customers still were without electricity, but nearly all should have power restored in the coming hours.

Crews from elsewhere in Michigan and Ohio are helping DTE workers in the restoration.

Powerful thunderstorms rolled Wednesday across southern and southeast Michigan with up to 70 mph winds.

Classes were canceled until Monday at Albion College, 85 miles west of Detroit. Outages also were reported in adjacent Jackson County.

Power outages closed some Detroit-area schools Thursday. The Grand Blanc area near Flint also saw damage from high winds.

Regarding the extensive power outage downtown, DTE issued a statement saying:

"DTE Energy also continues to collaborate with the City of Detroit to address cable failures which occurred on the electric system that serves the City of Detroit and a number of their large customers. DTE Energy crews have worked overnight and throughout the day to help the city make repairs and bring service back up to the affected customers. It appears power will be restored later today [Thursday]."
