Firefighters keep close watch on East Point plant

EAST POINT, Ga. -

East Point firefighters kept a watchful eye overnight for flare ups and doused any remaining hotspots at the Classic Mattress Company site. A massive fire had broken out there early Wednesday afternoon.

According to a spokesperson for the East Point Fire Department, teams of firefighters kept a vigil at the location in the 1000 block of Oakleigh Drive.

"A secondary survey revealed ten trailers damaged, two dumpsters and approximately 15 to 20 percent of the structure which sustained fire and water damage," said Renita T. Shelton, spokesperson for East Point Fire Dept.

Fire trucks were expected to remain at the mattress site Thursday, "until the scene is rendered safe," Shelton said.

A row of trailers carrying mattresses and other bedding caught fire Wednesday afternoon. Shelton said no firefighters or civilians were injured related to the fire.

Firefighters said the blaze began outside of the building, which is located in an industrial park. Hapeville and College Park Fire Departments aided East Point Firefighters in battling Wednesday's blaze.

According to East Point Fire Dept., the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
