Body Found Near Castaic Lake Isn't Missing Student

Castaic, CA -

(FOX 11 / AP) Authorities say a burned body found near a Southern California lake isn't that of a missing college student but rather an unrelated murder victim.

Sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker says Wednesday that the remains found a week ago near Castaic Lake aren't those of 19-year-old Bryce Laspisa.

He says they belong to Lamondre Miles. Investigators believe the South Los Angeles man was killed in Hawthorne and his body dumped and burned. Three people have been arrested.

The body was found when firefighters doused a small brush blaze.

Meanwhile, the search continues for Laspisa, a Sierra College student who vanished last month while traveling from Northern California to visit his parents in Orange County. His SUV was later found on its side at the lake 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

From Gigi Graciette:

I see a lot of terrible things and I meet a lot of horrible people and most days that's before I even get to work.

But then there are days like today when my faith in mankind is renewed by meeting people like Amanda, Heidi, Chris and Chardonnay.

There are dozens more and I wish I could give you all their names to give them the credit they so richly deserve but I can't so I will have to refer to all of them as the "volunteers".

They began gathering at 8 o'clock in the morning; mostly women in running shoes, tracksuits, others in hiking boots. All of them with one mission in mind: help find a missing teenager named Bryce Laspisa.

None of them know Bryce or his family and it doesn't matter. A kid is in trouble, a mom and dad are desperate and they want to help. That is what matters to the volunteers.

Volunteers make the world a better place, I have always believed that. They rarely get much more than the personal satisfaction of knowing they tried to help but that's enough. They are selfless.

Bryce is only 19 and today marks two weeks since anyone has seen him.

By all accounts he's a good kid and hope is high that he'll be found soon...alive and well. Everything else, whatever the circumstances are that led to his disappearance, can be worked out.

And to the volunteers, thank you. Thank you so much. You make the world a better place. You really do.
