'Neighbor from hell' tries to withdraw plea, faces trial

Posted: Updated:

Despite previously pleading guilty to harassment and violating a restraining order, Lori Christensen is now headed for a Blakely trial after attempting to withdraw that plea.

Christensen entered her plea on July 15 after her White Bear Lake neighbors reported continued harassment. That was the first scheduled trial date, and at the time, Christensen agreed to a 10-year probationary period that would keep her out of the neighborhood.

Although the agreement was signed by Christensen and that probationary period was included in those documents, a Blakely waiver form to approve the 10-year period was not available since the plea came as a surprise.

Through her counsel, Christensen agreed to sign the form at or before her sentencing appearance. On Wednesday, she refused. Rather, she brought a motion to withdraw her guilty plea instead.

Judge Judith Tilsen denied the motion to withdraw and has since ordered a Blakely trial, which is set to begin on Oct. 14.

Since a stronger than usual sentence is being sought, the state needs to prove aggravating factors exist in order to sentence Christensen to more than the sentencing guidelines allow.

Greg and Kimberly Hoffman put up with harassing messages and bizarre behavior for three long years, eventually taking out a restraining order against the woman who hung signs to the family on her garage door and was even filmed doing a lewd dance while the couple's 12-year-old son had a birthday party.

Under the terms of the restraining order, Christensen could not have direct or indirect contact with the Hoffmans -- but that didn't stop her from calling the city inspector over petty things like damage to the Hoffmans' siding or litter from recycling.

Police and prosecutors documented dozens of cases of harassment and 21 separate calls to police before Christensen was charged with felony stalking and violating a restraining order in May 2012.
