Cool Pictures: Hail Storm in Colorado

It was over a month ago here in Minnesota when we were dealing with lots of large hail. On Monday, Colorado got it's share, and it piled up to make for some dramatic pictures. Hail is a little more common in the high areas of the west, as states like Colorado and Wyoming are much closer to the freezing level Any storm that gets going out there has the potential to tap into some colder air aloft much quicker than the Upper Midwest.

A surge of tropical moisture caused impressive rain totals to fall from Arizona to New Mexico to Utah to Colorado and Wyoming on Monday. Not only was the hail impressive but so was the rain. Many areas received 1-2 inches of rain in a very short period of time resulting in flash flooding.

The rising waters also transported the massive amount of hail to form piles that were more than knee deep in areas. The worst of the storm hit the western suburbs of Denver resulting in impassable streets due to the large amounts of hail.

There is some good news, the rain was much needed and it helped to bring rainfall totals to near normal for some areas.
