Sources: City makes offer to church

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A deal could be finalized soon that would allow the Atlanta Falcons to build their new billion dollar stadium on the preferred site.

Two churches sit on the south site, which has been deemed the ideal location for the stadium. One church, Friendship Baptist, has already agreed to a $19 million buyout. The other, Mount Vernon Baptist, hasn't made a decision yet.

FOX 5's Morse Diggs reports that could change soon.  Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has secured funding to make a formal offer of more than $14 million to Mount Vernon, according to sources.

That offer was reportedly made on Tuesday by Atlanta Chief Operating Officer Duriya Farooqui to the Rev. Rodney K. Turner.

The offer was more than twice what the state had previously said it could pay based on land appraisals.

The church congregation must now approve the offer. A final resolution is expected in five to 10 days.

The south site is preferred by many due to its proximity to public transportation sites.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank had set a two-week deadline on making a final decision on the stadium's site. The team would like to begin play in the new stadium at the beginning of the 2017 season.
