'Two Million Bikers' 9/11 motorcycle rally rolls through DC

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC -

It was billed as a ride to show respect for the 9-11 victims, their families and the military and thousands showed up to take part.

The Two Million Bikers Ride to D.C. began Wednesday morning in Fort Washington and made its way into the city in fractured groups, riding by memorials, monuments and the U.S. Capitol.

The roar of countless motorcycles could be heard throughout the city today.

Many of them were riding in small groups after their permit to ride together was denied by the national park service.

If there wasn't a flag flying from the back of the bike--the others riders were likely wearing something patriotic.

Thousands of riders converged on a Harley Davidson dealership in Fort Washington where they sang the Star Spangled Banner before marking the times the towers fell in New York and setting off for the memorials and the capitol.

The ride was billed as a show of respect for 9-11 victims and their families.

Instead of one large group riding together through the city, the bikers taking part broke off and rode in smaller packs--making their presence known with twists of the throttle.

Dan Dalton rode down from Scranton, Pennsylvania with a few things on his mind.

“The incident in Benghazi, I wanted to show some support for the gentlemen staging that rally today, the other one is to show our support for 9-11 people and the first responders that were killed".

As the bikers were riding through, a handful of people took part in what some were calling the Million Muslim March on the Mall where there were more police officers than demonstrators.

A few feet away watching it all was an anti-Muslim group carrying large signs with hateful messages.

By all accounts the protests were peaceful on the Mall and on the roads.
