It's the time of year when Apple unveils its newest model of the iPhone, and this year's announcement at the company's headquarters in California was twice as nice for tech fans.
While the unveiling didn't have the wow-factor that many have come to associate with Apple, the company was clearly trying to appeal to both high-end and budget-conscious customers as they work to address new challenges.
For hardcore apple fans, getting the first look at the new iPhone is like Christmas coming early. This time around, they had two new models to ogle.
The iPhone 5S offers a better camera, a faster processor and a new fingerprint scanner for extra security. Meanwhile, the iPhone 5C comes with a wallet-friendly price tag and an array of colors to choose from.
Pioneer Press tech writer Julio Ojeda-Zapata told FOX 9 News he sees the new batch of Apple products as a small step forward, not a giant leap. Yet, with competitors like Samsung and Nokia selling the lion's share of smartphones globally, Apple needed a cheaper option to gain ground in the market it created.
"Apple has needed to diversify its product line because every other company has multiple models at different price points, and Apple has had the one phone," Ojeda-Zapata explained. "It's getting to the point where they can't do that anymore."
Yet, far from tarnishing the company's image as a luxury brand, customers outside the Apple Store in Uptown said a less-expensive iPhone could please customers to their core.
The 5C will start at $99 with a 2-year contract, but without a contract, it'll cost $549. Since that's just $100 less than the 5S model, it's still not exactly cheap. Both phones will go on sale a week from Friday.
