Homemaking-bomb suspect creates second bomb scare in Detroit neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit Police searched two homes Tuesday after a suspect in court announced he had booby trapped them.

Joel Suminski was in court for sentencing on other charges, including making homemade explosives that were found in his home in May 2012.  Suminski made a comment during that court appearance that lead authorities to believe his home and the vacant home next door had bombs inside.

Suminski reportedly announced out loud in court, "I booby trapped my old house."

The bomb squad was called in to search the two homes on Rossini St. near Hayes and E. State Fair. Streets were cleared and some neighbors were evacuated.

Bomb-sniffing dogs were even called in before the authorities gave the all-clear. No bombs were said to have been found.

Suminski is out on bond at this time, but police say he will be picked up again for questioning.
