Caught On Camera: Meteor Streaks Across Southern US

Monday night, while we were watching our temperatures fall, they were watching something else fall across Alabama and Georgia. A meteor, bright enough to illuminate the sky and get on camera, streaked across those southern states. The space fragment, about the size of a baseball, was part of a comet. The atmosphere really did a great job of protecting us as the meteor fell apart just 3 seconds after entering the atmosphere.

It did get deep enough inside to create a sonic boom, a boom heard by several eyewitnesses. A sonic boom is created when an object passes through the air so fast that the waves created out ahead of it can't get away and are forced together, eventually merging into a single shock wave. Below is the path of the meteor, the area where the sonic boom was most likely heard.

Below is the video link to Monday night's meteor over the south. You have to look closely because just like a shooting start, if you blink you will miss it. Look at the bottom center of the video to see the meteor streak by.
