Teen who accidentally shot baby in north Minneapolis turns himself in

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

The 17-year-old suspect wanted in connection with the accidental shooting of a north Minneapolis infant turned himself in at City Hall early Tuesday morning.

On Thursday night, a bullet struck a 2-month-old boy inside a house on the 2400 block of Emerson Avenue North.

According to Minneapolis police, the baby's father initially old police he was holding his son in his arms when he ducked after hearing a gunshot and then realized the boy had been struck in the neck. 

After further investigation, police detectives learned the accidental shooting actually occurred in the home when a gun in the teenager's custody discharged.

The teen, who is the victim's uncle, then fled the scene, police said.

The baby was brought to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition on Thursday, but the baby's current condition is unknown.

The 17-year-old gunman remains in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center.
