Armed Man Killed In Deputy Involved Shooting

East Los Angeles, CA -

From Gigi Graciette:

Police call him a suspect.

His family calls him a victim.

Olga simply calls him "hijo".

I'm referring to the woman who came up to me in City Terrace this morning, introducing herself as the mother of the man killed in the deputy involved shooting.

In Spanish and in between heart-wrenching sobs, she told me his name was Carlos Ernesto and he was 23. She is as distraught as any mother would be having just lost her baby, no matter what the circumstances.

She wants help, she says. "Quiero una investigación completa. Mi hijo no tenía una pistola." She wants an investigation; a complete one because she claims her son didn't have a gun.

Preliminary information from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is that two of their deputy's, responding to another call in City Terrace around 1:30 this morning, were flagged down by someone reporting a man walking around waving a gun.

Deputy's say they spotted Oliva, stopped him for questioning and then a "struggle ensued" and that Oliva pulled a gun on them. Both deputy's fired and moments later Oliva was dead.

The Sheriff's Homicide Bureau will investigate the shooting, along with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the County Office of Independent Review, as is standard practice in these cases.

"Quiero saber la verdad. La verdad," says Olga. I want to know the truth. The truth.

(FOX 11 / CNS) A man who pointed a gun at deputies was killed this morning in a deputy-involved shooting in East Los Angeles, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. in the area of East Almanza Lane and Miller Avenue, said Deputy Aura Sierra-Lidman of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. No deputies were injured.

Investigators at the scene said deputies responding to a domestic dispute call were alerted by a neighbor to the presence of a man with a gun. When the deputies confronted the man, an altercation occurred and the suspect pulled a gun and pointed it at them, media outlets reported. At that point, both deputies reportedly opened fire.

The man, who had nothing to do with the original domestic dispute call, took off running but collapsed at the corner of East Almanza and Miller. Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives were dispatched to the scene to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, Sierra-Lidman said.

The shooting will also be investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the County Office of Independent Review, as is standard in such cases.
