Police say woman ran unlicensed home for elderly

MARIETTA, Ga. -

Marietta police are looking for the owner of an unlicensed personal care home for the elderly. Detectives say they found rotten food and substandard conditions in the facility that was supposed to take care of senior and disabled citizens.

Detectives said the unlicensed personal care home on Laurel Springs Lane in Marietta was operated by Raequel Penny.

State investigators notified police when they were turned away recently.

"When they came to actually try to conduct a search of the house and to make sure it was within standards, one of the employees refused them access to the house, at which time they came directly to the police department," said Officer David Baldwin of the Marietta Police Department.

Detectives came back with a search warrant in less than 36 hours, but Penny and the six to 10 patients living there had vanished.

Those elderly patients are the concern now.

"You put your parent in there thinking that they are getting their medication, that they are going to be taken care of…and now you have an unlicensed facility that's coming in, that's cashing those Social Security checks and providing them what could be dog food," said Karen Hallacy of the Cobb Neighborhood Safety Commission.
