The Vikings 34-24 loss to the Detroit Lions had a little good, a little more bad, and a whole lot of ugly.
First the good. Adrian Peterson took his first handoff from Christian Ponder and ran 78 yards for a touchdown. That came after the Lions effortlessly worked their way down the field and missed a field goal. After watching the Lions play like the Lions, that is continuously shooting themselves in the foot, the Vikings took a 14-13 lead to the half. Also the defense held the NFL's best receiver to just four catches for 37 yards.
Ponder was in a word, bad. He threw three interceptions including one where he rolled to his left and tried to throw the ball out of bounds. In the process, he had his arm hit and the wobbly ball was easily intercepted. He also fumbled once on a bad exchange with Adrian Peterson.
The defense was equally as bad as they watched the Lions put up 469 yards of total offense. Outside of the two turnovers, they forced the Lions into a three-and out only one time the entire game and allowed both Reggie Bush and Joique Bell to have their way in the running and screen games.
Not to worry as there was plenty of ugly as well. Peterson carried 17 more times after his touchdown and picked up 15 yards. Not nearly enough make a difference. Five penalties for 52 yards were big as well as the team picked up two in the fourth quarter as the Lions salted away the clock.
It won't get any easier this week as the team travels to Chicago to face the Bears.
