Where's Oakland U? Auburn Hills, says councilwoman

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

Oakland University is headquartered in the Detroit suburb of Auburn Hills, and its campus extends into neighboring Rochester Hills.

Even so, the school has always used a mailing address for a third Detroit suburb 5 miles to the east -- the city of Rochester.

Auburn Hills City Councilwoman Anne Doyle says it's about time that the university and the public recognize her city as Oakland University's hometown.

Doyle says its the Auburn Hills taxpayers who provide the campus with its road maintenance, back-up police protection and other first responders.

"Wouldn't it be nice for (Oakland University) to publicly acknowledge the city and the taxpayers of Auburn Hills who are actually providing all of that?" Doyle asked FOX 2.

"To me it's very ironic that a university that should be having academic credibility with students would be not telling the truth to the public and to its students about where they are even physically located."

The university lists its mailing address as 2200 N. Squirrel Road, Rochester. That address lies in Auburn Hills.

One reason for the Rochester mailing address is that there was no Auburn Hills or Rochester Hills when Oakland University opened its doors 54 years ago.

Matilda Dodge Wilson donated the land that became the university in 1957, and she "felt a great deal of affinity for the city of Rochester for welcoming with open arms the charter class of students in 1959," said university spokesman Theodore Montgomery .

"Back in the day, the postmaster registered a Rochester mailing address for our university," Montgomery said. "We have a great relationship with Auburn Hills, we partner with them on many initiatives. We brag about what great neighbors they are."

Auburn Hills Mayor James McDonald said the feelings are mutual.

"We have a good relationship with them and we're proud of them," he said. "And I hope they're proud of Auburn Hills."
