The Rosemount, Apple Valley and Eagan high schools have a rich history in District 196, a history of achievement and a history of sacrifice.
Ben Kopp, Rosemount class of 2004.
Andrew Wilfhart, Rosemount class of 1996.
Daniel Olsen, Eagan class of 2005.
Chris Goeke, Apple Valley class of 2004.
All went into the military, all were killed in action.
"I grew up in a military family and I think it's instilled in me you have to pay respect for those folks that have been killed in action, you need to remember them," said Joel Kiekbusch, a special education teacher in the district.
Kiekbusch, who didn't know any of the men, wanted to honor their service, so he created the Warrior 196 5K Memorial Run to create scholarships to honor them.
"I think Joel is a man to honor himself when he had no children who served in the armed forces but he comes up with this idea to honor and remember other people's children who were there. Fantastic idea," says Chris Goeke's father Randy Goeke.
Ben Kopp's mother Jill Stephenson said the honor means everything to their family.
"It means even more because Ben grew up in this community and to know his legacy is alive and well here and that somebody else wants to invest in that means a lot to me as a mother," she said.
The plan is to create four scholarships, one for arts, another academics, athletics and one for someone from the district going into the military. They hope to hand out their first scholarship to the class of 2014.
The Warrior 196 5K Memorial Run will take place at Rosemount High School on Sept. 29th at 9 a.m.
