Minneapolis City Council candidate to combat domestic violence

Posted: Updated:

Minneapolis City Council candidate Andrew Johnson wants to prioritize domestic violence awareness after seeing it first-hand.

On Thursday, Johnson said he wanted to meet with voters in south Minneapolis. Just as he pulled into a parking spot, he said a woman in a moving car screamed for help. That's when he hit the gas pedal and realized he was now in hot pursuit.

The democratic candidate's plan was simply to knock on a few doors and get some support when they heard cries for help.

"I just stepped on the gas and didn't think twice about it," Johnson told FOX 9 News.

Along with two of his campaign volunteers in this Nissan Altima, Johnson said he chased a silver Jaguar for several blocks driving about 70 miles per hour.

"I saw her falling out of the passenger seat of the car trying to get out," said another driver who joined the pursuit.

Witnesses said once the male driver of the Jaguar stopped at the corner of East 49th Street and South 41st Avenue south, a woman stumbled out of the car as the driver tried to grab her.

That's when Johnson pulled his car up between the two of them to shield the victim and block his escape route.

The driver eventually took off and Minneapolis police say the woman refused treatment at the scene.

A neighbor who stopped to help talked to the victim who said she was escaping her boyfriend.

As for Johnson's campaign, he says domestic violence education and prevention will now be a top priority.

"It absolutely gives you first-hand experience, it hits close to home and it just shows how much more work we have to do," Johnson said.

All the people who helped in this situation say they don't want to be called heroes, but hope others would respond in the same way if they saw something like this happening in their neighborhood.
