Atlanta police van in crash outside hospital

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta police are investigating a crash in which a police van transporting a prisoner struck a car outside a downtown hospital.

A spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department tells FOX 5 News that the wreck happened Friday night in front of Piedmont Hospital. The police van struck a BMW that was trying to turn left in front of the van.

Atlanta police spokesman John Chafee says the driver of the BMW was cited for failing to yield. He says the driver complained of neck and elbow pain while the prisoner in the police van complained of shoulder and knee pain. Both were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Chafee says the officer complained of head pain but declined to be taken to the hospital.
