Philly Muralist, Daughters Using Art To Empower Tanzanian Girls

PHILADELPHIA -

A Philadelphia muralist and her daughters have made it their mission to improve the lives of girls in Tanzania. And they are doing it through the power of art!

Meg Saligman ventured to Tanzania with her daughters, 17-year-old Lindsay and 12-year-old Nina, to paint a mural on a water tower on the Tanzanian school's grounds.

The mural depicts the importance of water in the lives of the people there. Saligman is using the project to launch an art curriculum at the school. Her goal is to create a space for creativity, critical thinking and self-affirmation.

The Philadelphia-based non-profit Nurturing Minds harbors a strong support for the school, and has sent a number of Philly natives to spend time there.

Saligman's family spent five weeks in Tanzania, working with the Secondary Education for Girls Advancement School to create the mural.

During the day, everyone worked together to paint the mural. The girls painted together, talked to each other, and even learned some Swahili.

The Saligmans documented their experiences with photos, videos and a blog.

When asked what surprised her the most, Lindsay said, "Life there is more difficult than the life I'm accustomed to. Despite living a life with so many challenges, how dedicated the people we met there were to making us happy, rather than worrying about their own problems, of which there are millions."
