Pressure cooker at Conn. park prompts response

Posted: Updated:

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - An abandoned pressure cooker at a Bridgeport park near Long Island Sound prompted a response from the U.S. Coast Guard, forced the evacuation of nearby buildings, halted a Connecticut-to-Long Island ferry and brought in the State Police bomb squad.

The Connecticut Post reports that Bridgeport police were alerted at about 11 a.m. Thursday. A police spokesman says it "created some alarm."

Pressure cooker bombs loaded with shrapnel exploded near the Boston Marathon finish line in April, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others.

The State Police bomb squad blew up the pressure cooker, which turned out to be empty.

The U.S. Coast Guard established a 2,000-yard safe zone and two buildings at the nearby University of Bridgeport were evacuated.

The Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry was held at dock.
