Junior Roller Derby offers girls a chance to compete

Posted: Updated:
ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

It's a melting pot of awesomeness. The Darlings Of Destruction.

Girls ages eight to 17, from all walks of life, all coming together for acceptance and empowerment.

This Is Junior Roller Derby. A very competitive and real sport where girls have to check intolerances and egos at the door.

According to the Women's Sports Foundation, girls, more so than boys have trouble with self esteem, and a lot of that has to do with a lack of team sport participation. These skaters are forced to believe in themselves, and work together, on and off the track.

A recent study from The University Of Chicago found that tweens and teens who play team sports have better grades, more confidence, are less likely to do drugs, less likely to become teenage mothers, and are overall more healthy than those who do not play a team sport. Not only has roller derby helped these young athletes get in shape, but the team sport has taught them to be accepting of others, and respect themselves.

The Darlings Of Destruction, the Largest Junior Roller Derby League in southeast Michigan, is looking for new skaters. Every Monday in September from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., interested girls ages 8-17 and parents are welcome to drop into a practice to check out what these girls do on skates.

The Darlings Of Destruction are based out of The Rochester Hills Skating And Sports Arena at 1700 S. Livernois, Rochester Hills, Michigan 48307.
