Detroit Schools open Pre-K enrollment at 70 sites

DETROIT (AP) -

The Detroit Public Schools is encouraging parents to enroll their children in pre-kindergarten programs at 70 sites across the district.

The "Pre-K Enrollment Extravaganza" will be held Friday at each school where pre-kindergarten will be taught.

Special enrollment events also will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Beard and Fleming early learning neighborhood centers.

As part of the district's 5-year strategic plan, the new Universal Pre-K program adds 25 additional early learning classrooms to 14 sites across Detroit. The district will operate 215 pre-kindergarten classrooms designed to serve 3,530 children.

The first day of classes is Sept. 16.
