Copper thieves hamper businesses in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Investigators are hoping surveillance footage will help them track down a pair of serial copper thieves.

DeKalb County police believe the two men seen in the video are behind a series of thefts along Candler Road. Six businesses near McAffee Road have been hit in the past couple of weeks.

Dan Knisley provided FOX 5 with surveillance video in hopes that someone will recognize the men suspected of stripping about $1,000 worth of copper from his Easy Rental furniture store on August 17.

Barber Paul Pittman is grateful that Knisley invested thousands of dollars to secure the new electrical panels. He works at the 5 Dollar Barber Shop located in the same building and still gets frustrated talking about the toll this crime took on his colleagues.

"It all of the lights, the electricity, out of the building. So we didn't have any at all," Pittman said. "So for about four straight days, you had 18 barbers that work here and we are out of work for four days."

The barber shop and Easy Rental recovered, but Knisley says other small businesses on the stretch of Candler Road have taken even worse hits from the copper thieves' costly crimes.

"The seafood place that had been there for 40 years, they are just out of business because they don't have the money to replace the copper," Knisley said.

The frustrated barber has a message for the thieves stealing from this community.

"There are no shortcuts for hard work," Pittman said. "You got to work."

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call police.
