Pause In Global Warming: Credit Given To Cooling Pacific

Posted: Updated:

Whether or not you believe in Global Warming, one fact is that the annual mean temperature has not risen so far in the 21rst century. Some scientists credit this pause in global warming to a cooling of the Eastern Pacific along the equator. This further leads to the theory that global warming is a result of anthropogenic forcing. Ok, hold on, anthropogenic forcing is just a fancy way of saying it's our fault. It means that global warming is a result of human, rather than natural, factors. Such factors include increased greenhouse gas concentrations associated with fossil fuel burning, aerosols produced as an industrial by-product, and humans changing the landscape as they continue to build cities.

This hiatus in global warming is also a part of the natural climate cycle. The cooling of the eastern equatorial Pacific leads to similar patterns as in a typical La Nina episode. The drought in the south is one example of this. Although on the ten year plan global warming may be halted, the serious increase in greenhouse gasses will eventually overcome this period of temperature stagnation.
