As we turn the calendar page to yet another month, we say good bye to meteorological summer and hello to meteorological fall. Of course fall doesn't officially arrive until September 22nd at 3:44 PM; however autumn like weather will become more and more common way before then.

We will mostly likely start to feel that nip in the air during the mornings. After Labor Day, as we send the kids off to school, we should notice a little extra bite in the air. Below are graphs showing the average Twin Cities highs and lows for the ninth month of the year.

September is also the month when we can see our first taste of winter. It's a month of extremes and that is especially true for us here in Minnesota. Have you ever wondered how much rain, snow, cold or heat we get during this month? Here is a list of some of the extremes for this month, including the warmest and coldest average temps for the month.

We can't write off summer completely. The warmest temperature ever for the month of September occurred on the 10th back in 1931 when the mercury soared to a whopping 104°. On the flip side, we could get a bit flaky by month's end. Although the average first inch of snow usually occurs by November 18th, we did have 1.7" fall on September 26, 1942, which was the earliest 1" snowfall on record for the Twin Cities. So its safe to say that if you haven't located the show shovel just yet, you still have time.
