Afternoon rain storm dumps rain on southeast valley

Posted: Updated:

There was more monsoon weather across the valley this Labor Day. Some morning dust blanketed the metro, followed by heavy showers.

The dust blew in about 9 a.m., and Monday afternoon, the ADOT camera on the Loop 101 at Broadway in Tempe captured a pretty good rainstorm.

The rain kept moving northwest through town. Video from the FOX 10 towercam on South Mountain, looking north, caught rain falling through the clouds.

Before it arrived in Phoenix, the storm was in the southeast valley. That's where the most rain fell.

Standing water created a wet mess along Guadalupe near Kyrene. In Chandler, lightning struck a palm tree and sparked a fire. Firefighters say nobody was home and crews put out the flames.

The rain didn't last very long, but the clouds lingered.

During the entire month of August, Apache Junction takes the cake for the most rainfall in the valley, with 2.09 inches. It's followed by 1.42" in Buckeye, 1.38" at Litchfield Park,1.3" in Goodyear, and 1.06" in Ahwatukee.

Some people might think that August has been very wet compared to other years, but that's not the case in every valley city. The normal for August should be an inch of rain at Sky Harbor. But this year, only .36" fell at Sky Harbor. Gilbert received only .28" during August.

In August 2008, Sky Harbor got 3.5 inches.
